Messing About By the River
As part of The Asgard Project we not only explore the wilds of big walls on Baffin Island but we find out about the star of the show Leo Houlding. For this section of the film we travelled to one of the places Leo first climbed when he was a kid. This took us to Armathwaite in Cumbria. As it was local we thought we'd try a more ambitious shot on a wire cam moving across the river revealing the crag.We brought in our engineer in chief Dave Reeves and cameraman Ian Burton to help with the job. It was a sweltering day and a good time was had by all, but did we get the shot completed? Well that would be telling, you'll have to wait to see the film for that!

Yosemite Sean

The third and final training trip for the Asgard Project to Yosemite is now in the can. The objectives for this trip were to introduce Leo's climbing partner for Mt Asgard; Sean 'Stanley' Leary into the project and get current with big walling techniques, as well as get the filming crew up to speed with filming on these vast chunks of rock. Things didn't quite go according to plan as the weather was unusually inclement and Sean had to work for much of the trip. However we made the most of time and conditions we had, learnt a lot and managed to produce some pretty decent footage!

Learning to Fly

The plan for the Asgard Project has taken a few twists and turns of late however having just returned from the ‘learning to fly’ training mission in the Arco Valley, Italy we are pretty much back on track.
Leo, again with Berghaus teammate Carlos Suarez met up with top wingsuit specialist Robbie Pecnik (Croatia). The trip was non-stop action as we only had 3 days to learn to fly and wrap the shoot up.
Monte Brento in the Arco Valley is one the world’s finest BASE jumping cliffs, the massive overhanging cliff is around 700m and being placed high up the valley a safe exit and plenty of airtime are guaranteed. 5am starts are the standard at Brento allowing time for two jumps in the morning before the wind makes it too dangerous. Then after a quick siesta its back up the hill for an evening jump.
Needless to say everybody returned from the trip safe but exhausted, Leo did very well; ‘he can fly’ was Robbie’s verdict. Fingers crossed for the conditions on the top of Asgard where Leo and the team hope to make a wingsuit descent. A short teaser from the Brento trip giving a taste of the action will follow, next stop Yosemite!

600kg to the Arctic Circle

Due to the remote location of Mt. Asgard (in the Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island) and the extreme nature of our expedition some careful forward planning is required.
During the summer months the snow and ice melts from the approach valleys which turn to soft tundra meaning each person can only carry a 25kg pack at the most (that's still pretty heavy!). With this weight limitation it's 3 or 4 days hike to reach Mt. Asgard from the drop off point (we get dropped off by chartered local fishermen at the valley inlet). However a 4 week expedition of 6 people, where up to two weeks maybe spent on the wall, is going to require a bit more than 25kg per person.
That's why we've sent 600 kgs of equipment and supplies ahead of us as it can be fired up the valley to Mt. Asgard in a day via skidoo during the winter months.
5 massive haul bags and 11 barrels were collected from the front door of Leo's cottage in rural lakeland delivered to our Eskimo friend's Igloo in the Arctic. Next time we see this lot, Mount Asgard will be in the background, as long as the polar bears don't get it!
(That would really take the edge off the trip if we got there only to find a team of polar bears had nicked the equipment and already climbed the route....

Fellowship of the Riglos

The first part of filming for my new climbing flick, which goes under the code name of 'The Asgard Project' is all in the can and the edit is under way. We flew out to Riglos in Spain with climber Leo Houlding and met up with his Spanish counterpart, Carlos Suarez. Riglos is a stunning place with a very peaceful vibe about it. The objective was for Leo to work on his climbing fitness and get current with BASE jumping. To achieve this they set a target of trying to climb two of the massive 300m towers in two hours!
They got pretty close with 2hrs 35mins but that didn't really matter, the key thing is we had a good laugh, got some great action in the can and have a cracking opening chapter to the new film, hooray!
